When to choose each one

flomoplus

What it does well

Works closely with flomo's web version: word count, bulk delete, skins and full-screen mode. You can also save from the address bar, and import content from WeChat Reading, Dedao and RSS.

How to choose

Pick it if you mainly write and organize in flomo's web version. Pick Quick flomo if you want summaries, word lookup and citations while you read other web pages.

Cubox

What it does well

A full read-later library. It saves whole articles, supports highlights and review of your highlights, has AI summaries and Q&A, works on phone, tablet and computer, and syncs to other note tools.

How to choose

Pick it if you want to save articles to read later. Pick Quick flomo if you don't want another library and only want one clear note left in flomo.

SimpRead

What it does well

Turns web pages into a clean reading mode and lets you adjust page elements. It exports Markdown, PDF and other formats, works with many note tools, and can export to flomo. Its browser support is wider than Quick flomo's.

How to choose

Pick it if you first want comfortable layout and many export formats. Pick Quick flomo if you need built-in summaries, a vocabulary list and citations.

Eudic extension

What it does well

Deep dictionary and pronunciation data. Its vocabulary list syncs with the phone app, it has a vocabulary-study feature, and it can highlight key words on web pages by level. It can be bought outright.

How to choose

Pick it if your goal is to study English systematically and memorize words on your phone. Pick Quick flomo if you take notes on web pages as you read and want to send them to flomo.

Zotero Connector

What it does well

A real reference library. It captures metadata, manages PDFs, has writing plugins for Word and Google Docs, supports many citation styles, and the software itself is free.

How to choose

Pick it if you are writing a formal paper and cite journal articles and books. Quick flomo only makes [EB/OL] web citations, and the two can be used together.

When Quick flomo is not the right fit

  • You need it on your phone. Quick flomo only runs in desktop browsers.
  • You use Safari or Firefox. Only Chromium-based browsers are supported for now.
  • You want side-by-side full-page translation. Try Immersive Translate for that.
  • You want a completely free word lookup tool. Saladict is free and open source.
  • You need to cite journal articles, books or theses. Use a reference manager.
  • You don't use flomo and only want to save full articles. A read-later tool is more direct.

Sending to flomo uses the flomo record API, which flomo says requires PRO membership. Any other tool that uses this API has the same limit.
